Market Trends & Drivers

Global Stats
There are an estimated 2.7 billion connections to mobile services in 2006 -- enough for two people in every five. Growth in mobile connections is slowing in Western Europe and Japan, but connections in Africa and Asia/Pacific will more than double between 2006 and 2011. (Source: Gartner Group)

The U.S. cellular backhaul market is expected to reach $2.8 billion this year and rise to $15 billion by 2011. (Source: Light Reading)

The mobile broadband market is taking off, driven by the twin engines of HSDPA and EV-DO, with more power to come next year from Mobile WiMAX, according to Future Mobile Broadband: Revenue Opportunities for HSPA to LTE, EV-DO to UMB & WiMAX.  (Source: Informa Telecoms & Media)

In mid-June there were 162 WCDMA networks worldwide, 140 of those offered commercial HSDPA services. That translates into a HSDPA to WCDMA penetration rate of 86%, which is unbelievably high. 86% of WCDMA networks worldwide have now been upgraded to support HSDPA. (Source: Informa Telecoms & Media)

The WiMAX equipment market is forecasted to reach an annual $6 billion in 2012, and will have generated accumulated revenues of $15 billion by then. (Source: Maravedis)

Although Wi-Fi "zones" may be adequate for community applications, emergency communications require more reliable carrier-class technology. Allocated exclusively for public safety usage, 4.9-GHz spectrum enables applications such as video surveillance to be supported. Few 4.9-GHz networks have been deployed today, but it’s becoming a checklist item in municipal RFPs, and vendors must have a solution to remain in the game. (Source: Yankee Group)

Latin America
Connections to mobile services in Latin America passed the 300 million mark in 2006. Mobile penetration will exceed 60% in 2007 and top 70% in 2011. Service revenue will register compound annual growth of 6.1% for the period 2007 to 2011. (Source: Gartner Group)

Overall the total accumulative equipment market size for BWA/WiMAX in Brazil will represent a lucrative $300 million by 2010, which makes Brazil a key market for BWA/WiMAX vendors for years to come. (Source: Maravedis)

Asia Pacific
Mobile connections in Asia/Pacific will rise to almost 2 billion by the end of 2011. More than 13% of the region's mobile phone users will be using wideband code division multiple access technology by the end of the forecast period. (Source: Gartner Group)

Mobile connections will pass 100 million in 2008, though growth will slow. Service revenue is expected to fall, as the reduction of voice ARPU becomes too large to be offset by the growth in connections and data ARPU. (Source: Gartner Group)

EMEA
The number of mobile connections grew by 31% in 2006, to 128.8 million, and will exceed 200 million in 2011. Turkey will remain the biggest market but will lose share, while Iran will take second place from Saudi Arabia in 2008.  (Source: Gartner Group)

Enterprise network services revenue grew 4.1% in India in 2006. Over the period 2006 to 2011, the market will rise at a compound annual growth rate of 2.2%.  (Source: Gartner Group)

Mobile connections in Eastern Europe grew by 23% in 2006, to 330 million. Russia is still the biggest market, but connection growth slowed to 13%. Overall growth will slow each year, bringing the total to 469 million in 2011. (Source: Gartner Group)

The number of mobile connections grew by 1.9%, to 445 million. Germany remained the biggest market, with 87.7 million connections. Italy had the highest penetration rate, at 146%, and the most new connections, at 3.1 million. (Source: Gartner Group)

Enterprise network services revenue in France declined by 3.4%, to 9.1 billion euros in 2006. Revenue will continue to fall to reach 7.7 billion euros by 2011, as migration from traditional voice and data services to lower cost IP services prevails. (Source: Gartner Group)

North America
Mobile phone connections will reach 274 million in North America in 2007 and 365 million in 2011. Revenue from services will hit $164 billion in 2007, and reach $230 billion in 2011. (Source: Gartner Group)

Revenue from consumer fixed network services in North America rose 3% in 2006, to almost $100 billion. A modest compound annual growth rate of 1.5% from 2006 to 2011 will see that total reach $107 billion, achieved thanks to significant growth in the broadband access market. (Source: Gartner Group)

Verso Launches Carrier InterConnect Solution
The Verso Carrier InterConnect Solution is an integrated media and signaling VoIP gateway supported by the Verso Clarent® softswitch platform, targeting the wholesale and interconnect markets.

The new wholesale offering provides any-to-any voice network connectivity enabling the delivery of SIP services into legacy PRI, CAS and SS7 networks.  The solution simplifies and streamlines Class 4 deployments and provides the ability to deploy PSTN to VoIP interconnections by packaging the media gateway, switching, routing, monitoring and reporting elements into a single solution that incrementally scales to meet customer growth and capacity needs.

Verso Adds ASR-based Routing and Alarming and ENUM Support to MetroNet VoIP Overlay and Clarent® Class 4 Solutions
Verso has added two significant capabilities to its MetroNet VoIP Overlay and Class 4 solutions:  ASR-based routing and alarming and the Electronic Number Mapping System (ENUM).

ASR-based routing and alarming enables providers to choose the highest quality routes for every call, which results in increased call completion rates, revenues and profits. ENUM is a number mapping method that enhances the convergence of IP networks with the Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) by offering the capability to complete calls that are targeted to the legacy TDM network through lower cost IP based infrastructure. This capability results in significant operational and cost savings to Verso’s customers.

VoIP Service Level Monitoring and the iMarc Solution
By Glenn Jenkins, Director of Product Line Management - Access Products, Verso Technologies

The challenge
VoIP deployments are now outpacing traditional voice deployments.  The result is a dramatic increase in the number of customers and their networks which are required to support VoIP.  Many (if not all) of these networks were architected for data applications which can be tolerant of delay, packet loss, and jitter.  VoIP has rigid network requirements for those parameters and any one of them can significantly impact the user’s perceived quality of experience.  Voice services have traditionally been very high quality and robust.  As a result, users do not expect their voice service to show any degradation or unavailability.  The slightest voice degradation will make the user’s quality of experience unsatisfactory. In order to provide service in line with the customer’s expectations, a tool is needed for both pre and post VoIP deployment. This tool, VoIP Service Level Monitoring (VoIP SLM) must have the ability to assess the network’s capability to support VoIP, provide real-time monitoring of jitter, delay, and packet-loss on a per call and site-to-site basis, assist in forecasting potential network problems and help isolate and resolve network problems.
